Hatcher Pass State Park (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatcher_Pass) includes one of the last hard rock gold mines in South Central Alaska. The mine closed in the 1940's. It was a downhill ski area when I was a child in the 1950's and is a Nordic ski destination today. While the mines on the southeast side of the valley are no longer active, mining continues to the northwest and placer mining continues in the runoff of the Little Susitna River. My wife thinks that this is one of the most beautiful places in the world, one of God's gifts, and I agree. I have hundreds of pictures of the area. These are some taken late July this year when our daughter and grandson were visiting.

...I am not sure whether the color or B&W is more appropriate.

Interesting, and very well done.
I think your wife is right about it being the most beautiful place in the world! And you captured it so well, erbiv! Your pictures are sooo sharp and clear; I like the color one best of those two.
Great series w/great pics! I like the b&w version, it reflects the time period well. Ever do your own panning? Any luck? I owned some while in MT...only found a few small flakes tho.
Great series, love every picture. In my opinion 1 and 2 are perfect, the right shutter speed to allow the water to look like water not milk. Thank you for sharing.
A beautiful set! I enjoyed each and every one of them.

I am pulled to the color version as well although I would have been just as happy with the B&W had I not seen the color. It feels more appropriate for the subject.

Thanks Nikonian, I had not noticed the issue until you pointed it out. Have a good day.

Busted, I have done panning, own several pans but generally find fly fishing on such waters more rewarding!
I've only driven over Hatcher Pass once, and it was under a full overcast - but it was still beautiful, and that tundra above timberline looked even greener then. Nice series of shots here.
