As mentioned before, not much of a landscape type of photographer but working on it. I also enjoy B&W photos of other photographers. In the last year I purchased the Nik software and slowly learning how to use the B&W portion. At first I applied lots of texture and fine detail, I think I have finely worked past that stage and starting to like the softer look and feel of B&W. Feed back welcomed.

Are you using Silver Efex Pro? Which is your favorite preset?

In your photo it looks like the clouds are overly dark, and the marsh grasses almost blown out. If that was done for effect, then fine. I generally like a more realistic approach and would have used control points to lighten the clouds, darken the grass.

Yes using the mentioned software, so far I don't have a favorite preset. I did lighten the grass and darken the clouds. Exposure was spot on in original, changed to my liking.

I love love this shot! I love the contrast between the light grass and the hills. The angry clouds and the reflections in the water. I love how the line of the marsh against the hills forms leading lines that draw your eye into the picture. I can smell the earthy scent.
The only criticism is the highlights in the grass might be a little blown.

Thanks,
Yes, right on the edge, I almost squint my eyes when viewed on full screen.

Very nice, Martin. I love this. Only thing (and it's small) that bothers me, is that bright inverted U at the bottom about 1/3 in from the right side. Thanks for sharing!

I think you should continue to include landscapes in your shooting, as the ones you've posted are nice.

I like the light tone of the grass and how the dark trees separate its evenness from the contrasty sky. Nice composition.

It does look like there's some haloing on the tops of the trees. Don't know if that's from sharpening or contrast adjustments.

Thanks Gauss, no sharpening done to the image but did adjust contrast.

I like this location! It appears quite unique. Good eye.

I struggle with this image though. I think it's the processing. Hard to put my finger on it. I like heavily processed images when they don't look heavily processed. My recommendation would be to play around with NIK some more and work on processing. I like to try to get one brush stroke away from over processed.

Now next time.. Get out of that canoe. Float the canoe out in front of you. (I know your waste deep in water at this time) and photo the canoe and make that the subject... Knowing where you live, watch out for alligators! (Just joking here Martin.)

Hi Russ,
I've been playing with my Macro so much I've ignored my B&W and learning the Nik software. As soon as the creeks recede I'll be back at it. I know what I want, but can't get there yet.. Practice, Practice

I like this shot and probably would have missed the canoe front but hey tighten the crop and problem solved right?, I like the processing you have done yet saying that it might be overprocessed would change that but a very good shot none the less

The composition is perfect and I love the sky reflection. Like Russ, I have a slight problem with the tonality - the grass and part of the image look like a UV shot and I think the contrast is too high. It looks a bit over-cooked.

It's hard to know where to stop with modern software capable of almost anything. But I do have a suggestion:

Try using a graduated ND filter in shots such as this. It will bring down the tonal range to fit the exposure latitude of the sensor and you can start with an image that requires much less manipulation. Pros use them all the time but they try to keep it a secret for some reason. - Peter
