Does anyone know approximately what percentage of the total cost of a new D800 (for instance) is devoted to the movie capability function? Why can we not just purchase a new Nikon, Canon or whatever body without having to buy the movie capability also? Just wondering???

Movies are mostly software and once written really don't add much cost to a camera. Seems the mfgrs. feel they have to add this feature to their cameras to keep up with the Jones. I have yet to use it on mine, never bothered to even find out how to turn it on, zero interest. ;)

My point exactly - but you paid something $$$ for that feature to be included in the camera, yes?? You could have probably purchased another lens with the money spent on a feature you admittedly will not use. I agree and am a life long Nikon'er but I hesitate to buy something I have no intention of ever using.
Thanks for the post

Problem is what can you buy w/o it today. Practically every camera from PS to DSLR adds this, even the D800- I do agree with you in principal though.

Then I guess you'll have to settle for a Df.

If LiveView is a feature you want/need, then to add video is trivial.

As to how much to add video to a $2800 D800? Probably about $50 in added programming because the LiveView is already there.

You pay for development and engineer costs, not what it costs to put it in the little metal/plastic box. Regardless, your point remains valid with may of the Hogs who never have and never intend to shoot video.

I cannot tell you, but if you are considering buying the D800 I have it and the pictures and resolution is great. I also have a D700 and D200. Coming up through the ranks all the cameras are good. I did not find the price that much dif from other cameras at this level.

I doubt that there is much expense involved, but with DSLRs getting better and better video, competition rules the field. Of course, you can spend about the same amount and get a DSLR (Df) with no video.

This has been a thorn in the sides of many, but if you consider that your $79 phone has movie capability, I would think that it doesn't cost that much to add the functionality to the camera. After all, the necessary ingredients are already present.
