It seems that the flash overexposed the white on the head and the eye I think is not white as shown.

You caught the sheen on the feathers, very crisp and nice. Had you considered toning down the highlights in the background? Toby is hard to compete with, but those highlights are trying.

Actually, chapjohn, I think exposure was nailed. That almost white skin, and its fine, discernible surface textural detail are natural and occupy subject value VII to IIX and in this image is rendered as tone IIX.
And Rob, I do wonder about the faint blue in the iris of the eye. I've worked with and handled many blue-and-gold macaws and this is the first with blue iris pigment I've seen. Just curious; natural or artistic license?
thanks,
Dave in SD

Hi Dave, thank you for confirming correct exposure. In response to critique I did use some license with the eye however, inquisitive as I am, I Googled a random image and carried out a similar colour boost to it. Please see the result....I know little about these birds but having had a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo as a free flying household pet I would love to own one! Regards and thanks for looking, Rob.

Cool; of course, under natural viewing conditions without benefit of cyber "color boost" such a possibility went right over my head. Do you recall the circumstances of your original image? the macaw's posture suggests one that is well socialized and is soliciting scratching/groominf from a nearby person. had he been upset, angry, orvdisturbed in somevway that clear white facial skin would have taken on a distinct reddish blush. The image quickly makes me miss my late pet of over 30 years, " Angus", also a B&G macaw.

Cool; of course, under natural viewing conditions ... (show quote)

There was a very large indoor aviary located in a section of a Sydney football club I visited about three years ago. I had my first DSLR, a D5000 and 70-300mm with me so I kindly gave my wife and friends a leave pass to have drinks and play the pokies while I enjoyed myself. There were probably a hundred birds in the glass and wire mesh enclosure, a pseudo natural setting which included rocks and a stream. The birds were nesting, scratching and flying about quite naturally and happily. All except Toby who quite obviously knew what a camera was! He posed and climbed about, flapping and showing off, he was quite something..... Unfortunately this shot was the only one of him that survived after a HDD crash before I had a chance to backup at home. Never mind, I am sure that I'll return. I envy you having had the pleasure of such a beautiful pet. Cheers, Rob.

Great capture especially after the toning down the background. Exposure looks spot on to me.

been looking for awile trying to figure what was not right(MPO).Sharpness can't be better, seen the blow out on the head,I could live with that, color are spot on. So what is it. "Lightbulb!!!!!". the background. It's fighting for attention, and where the beak and talons fall into the darks you loose definition. I think if you were to use one of the midtone colors found in the background and do the whole background it would help the picture.
