Hi Karen ... most will probably call me a dinosaur for this but I'll suggest it anyway. Find yourself a local camera store that has reasonable prices and carries professional gear as well as consumer products and buy from them. As you do this get to know the person who connects with you.

The objective is to build a relationship. I did that years ago, I picked a local store that was privately owned and I built a relationship. Initially the prices weren't that attractive but I bought anyway. Later as I established the relationship the prices dropped, I always get a discount for whatever I buy and often its better than online pricing.

What's even worth more to me though, I can get unbiased honest advice. Sometimes I can't make up my mind on which to buy, having that relationship helps me make up my mind. I get amazing service too. Sometimes I've been unable to get a product because it's no longer in production, my contact always manages to find one for me.

If you were buying a point and shoot camera I wouldn't care where you bought it. It has no real accessories in the future and you throw it away when it doesn't work. But when you're buying an SLR you will want to add things to it as you get better and having a trusted relationship will make that a lot easier. An SLR is like a marriage, you really need a trusted friend to grow it effectively.

As to a warranty, if you are a sloppy kind always dropping stuff I suppose you might consider a warranty. If you're generally careful I'd advise against it. I've never bought a warranty and I've never regretted that decision. Keep in mind warranties are major profit centres for retailers because no one ever collects as a rule.

And last year I learned another reason too. A friend had an extended warranty on a product and took it back for repair. What they did instead was to refund the warranty cost instead of fixing the product as promised. It was cheaper for them to refund the cost of the warranty, and of course a hell of a lot more expensive for my friend to finally get it fixed elsewhere.

I think warranties are a waste of money.

I should add as well that when it comes to accidental damage or theft, a typical home insurance will cover those kinds of issues. So the warranty wouldn't be needed for that either.

And welcome to our forum, it will be a delight to help you any time.

YOU asked for a source, you didn't say what type. Tri-State may be a rip off, You can find bad reviews on any store.

So, you are saying most consumers "know immediately" every configuration of every camera made??? Sure....

"Why so defensive?"
Whut??? Go back and look at your first post then ask yourself that.

Geeeeesh,

Took me 10 minutes to find out that TriState is pretty much a rip off. Good suggestion for a New User. Of course most would know this immediately as Nikon does not offer a d3200 body only. I would be real leery of someone selling something that Nikon does not sell.

I also said "There are those that simply don't have access and those that would rather save a nickel that shop locally and that's what makes this country great, a little something for everyone." Meaning access to a local shop. I mentioned that twice. Also said "something for everyone. meaning I like visiting camera stores when possible. I didn't say you shouldn't shop on line. I have an Amazon account. To each his own, I was pointing out why I like camera stores

I never said anything about you in the following statement, "For someone getting into DSLR Photography and who wants Nikon, the D3200 w/18-55 is a good choice. Lots to learn and the 18-55 is a good lens to learn with. After time and practice you will be in a better position to decide what type lens you need to broaden your portfolio, landscape, macro, portrait, sports, etc. That's when a trip to the camera store becomes special as you can try the lenses and see the results." It was simply my opinion. Why so defensive?

BTW I also love and have visited B&H and Adorama both in person and on line. Great customer support

I couldn't agree with Bugfan more, I've done that a few times in my life and it always paid off plus I made lasting
friends along the way.

Everyone-Thank you for the kind greetings and wonderful advice. I feel I have a good plan to move forward (quickly....before Black Friday)! Skip the warranty (glad to hear that!!), investigate local camera shops (I don't know of any close by but you never know!), B&H, Amazon and Best Buy are good options. B&H is about an hour from my house so I may even take a ride into the city to check then out personally. Again...your insight is much appreciated. I hope to learn lots from everyone and someday I hope to have something to contribute!-Karen

I almost forgot....I need to check out Adorama and Cameta. I also need to stay away from anyone that drops the price significantly since Nikon controls the price. That is great advice since I had been seriously looking at one online posting that was $50 cheaper. Thanks again!

Me either and my local Best Buy has a camera guy who has been there for more than 5 years, who is extremely knowledgeable about cameras, lenses and photography. I have bought several cameras and lenses from him, most recently my D7100. I also like their extended warranty.

I got to put one to good use recently when my IP (Verizon Fios) had to replace my router. The HP Printer I have at home, simply would not connect to my router. Even after hours and hours of tech support (or in reality lack of tech support) between Verizon and HP. Because I had the extended warranty, they took back my printer after 6 months of use, and gave me 100% credit towards any other printer I wanted.

To me, that's exceptional service and well worth any extra cost (such as tax) I have to pay. Access to try out the product from a knowledgeable sales person, coupled with the comfort of knowing they'll stand behind me if anything goes wrong, made Best Buy an easy choice.

I bet if you stop in at BnH you will be glad you did, and that will be the last place you look.

Hello. I want to thank everyone that contributes to this site. There is so much wonderful information! I am looking to purchase my first digital SLR camera and, after researching my options, I am seriously considering the Nikon D3200 with the 18-55 mm lens. I think I talked my husband into purchasing it for me for Christmas and I would like to take advantage of Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals. I have been tracking the price and there are a few websites pricing the camera at $499. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to choose a seller? Also, should I consider purchasing a warranty? Thank you in advance for your input! -Karen

OddJobber makes a very important point. Beware of "great prices." They might bring you great grief instead. Best to find a dealer with a good rep and then stick with them.

What's nice is when you can have both -- great prices AND a reliable trustworthy retailer.

Thanks to everyone here kind enough to recommend us.

We'd be thrilled to have you visit. Take note of our hours - closed Fridays after 1:00pm and closed all day Saturday. Also, Sundays are the busiest.

There are two ways a distributor controls the price. First is MAP = Minimum Advertized Price. The distributor dictates the lowest price a retailer can advertize or post online and dictates how the retailer can reveal the real lower selling price to a shopper. Second is 'unilateral pricing,' wherein the distributor sets the minimum selling price. Both programs are enforced rigorously and for both the punishment for a violation can be draconian.

On the other hand - since all authorized dealers will sell at the MSRP, consider other things, like what benefits are offered - B&H offers a 4% credit towards future purchases. And for now, ordering from out-of-state online avoids sales tax.

All authorized dealers will sell at the MSRP if the MSRP is also either minimum selling price under a distributor's 'unilateral price' policy. The MSRP will be the price the authorized dealer advertizes if it is also the distributor's MAP, minimum advertized price.

Looking at new camera announcements and press releases distributors today often don't mention a MSRP value but provide an estimated "street price." For instance, the Nikon USA press release for the D3200 says, "The Nikon D3200 outfit with the versatile AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR image stabilization lens will be available in late April 2012 for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $699.95* in either Black or Red."
*Suggested retail price listed only as a suggestion. Actual prices are set by dealers and are subject to change at any time.

If the buyer's state has sales tax the buyer is liable to his or her state for "use tax," equal to the sales tax amount. An out-of-state retailer may no be able to collect and remit that tax but the buyer is liable for it anyway. The buyer's state tax form will ask and the buyer signs and submits that form under penalty of perjury. YMMV.
