Graham
A particularly fitting title
Personally to busy for me to stay on the lady. I find myself looking around trying to figure out what's in the background.

What I like about the photograph:
Composition: Leading lines to the subject, subject off centered and her pose itself has pleasing compositional lines.
Subject & Background: An obvious single dominant subject with no background distractions.
Lighting: A perfect exposure with the brighter area on the subject drawing and holding the eyes on her.
Interest: One wonders what the woman is thinking, or what she is looking at, or both. The image is personal and evocative.
What I don't like about the photograph:
That I cannot take one matching this quality. :|
Well done Graham. :)

Disagree with you on this one Fstop. Hard to find a better use of leading lines and neutral background (except for those lines). :)

May I offer a vertical crop as an option?
Original
Vertical Crop
No problem.. Still has to hold my interest, just not there for me.

What I like about this photo is the leading lines as already mentioned. The cell phone in her hand in contrast to her advancing age and dated hairstyl. Speaks of seeing the past while she holds the present and future.
What I don't like is the beam in the background that takes my eye right off the page.

I really like the vertical crop as it makes the subject larger and eliminates the background beam. The background doesn't contribute to the story, so we don't miss it.

Graham, the photos you post are always examples of your skill, talent and substantial artistic 'eye' so I was a little surprised to see your first posted, uncropped image. I was even more surprised when I saw your cropped, vertical version, because, IMHO, you cropped the wrong part out and that's not like you. The part that I think you should have cropped is the top little bit of the photo that runs just a little above the subjects head. I think both your crops would be 'cleaner' without that little piece of distracting garden darkness (or whatever it is). But, then again, as you might have said, I'm often fairly opinionated, sometimes, but sometimes I'm not. (how's that for obfuscation?)
What an interesting subject, contempory sandals, what looks like a pedicure, contempory purse, glasses and cellphone, but that hairdo out of the 20's and the unflattering dress - wow, what a combination - so I wonder how old the prescription is for her glasses and what her personality is like. She must be a liberal as I sense a political lean to the left.

Though I've enjoyed all the photos you've posted in this C&C forum, I like this one the best so far. I don't do much street photography and don't fully understand the genre, so haven't commented before you posted HER. I like the composition as is, with all that "negative space" which your eye can traverse easily by following the lines, from either direction, as they will lead you to the final intersecting line, her elbow, where she kindly leans at a compositionally perfect angle.
There's a lot more to this lady than meets the eye. She looks like an old frump with that stringy bun and baggy outfit and Walmart reading glasses but look again. That's not a dress, that's CROP PANTS. She has on some jeweled sandals that are NOT old lady sandals and her toenails appear polished with light polish. She's wearing 3 bracelets on one hand while the other grips a cellphone. The bottom half of her is in a girlish pose, while her elderly top half droops and gazes out at what? Is she real? She reminds me of Mrs. Doubtfire in that old Robin Williams movie.
Great!

Just for clarity, that wasn't Graham's crop. :)
