this was shot around 1/2 hr. past midnight with the fog rolling in.Before the cutting off of the boat there's a reason. It was shot at f2.8 ,1/440 sec., with d7100 , lens tamrom 17-50 at 40 mm, no flash or any lights except what you see. ISO set at-1
This was shot handheld.
Open to any suggestions on the shooting part,What you would have tried and maybe settings, for the next time that I decide to venture out in the wee hours of the night.Probably have to stop doing so soon. The wife is starting to think I'm doing something else.

i know the bow of the boat is missing LOL

Yes, we don't want to have any half boats lying around!

On a more serious note. I love this image. The reflection on the water is gorgeous. I love the fog in the background, it's beautifully composed, except for the "half boat".

The one criticism I would have is that the boat lights are too bright and they distract.

No it was not.Let's just say that if I had included the bow I would be considered a pervert,so I very hesitantly had to cut the bow off.,before taking the picture. And I must say that cloning would not have been an option either. Was hoping to get out on another night with hopefully no distractions but the weather did not co-operate .

Thanks Nightski.I agree on the lights tried to tone them down but it didn't look natural.Might try a light translucent yellow on them a see what will happen.Bloody lights they use now is a curse for night shooting.

I have been looking at this photo for awhile now thinking about what is it that makes me like this photo half boat and all. I like Nightski love the reflection from the moon on the water. I can almost feel the night air. I am not bothered by the half boat and I am not sure having the whole thing would improve the image. I do wish it was heading the other direction. I am a little confused by the -1 iso. The lowest mine goes is 100. Is that maybe exposure compensation instead? I am also in agreement about toning down the lights in the boat, though not too much since they pull your eye to the boat which in my opinion is the focal point.

 Maybe a little blurring instead? Or if you are handy in PS you could do a little creative painting.

Country Mama, you're right about the compensation level of -1. My Exif Viewer shows this as being shot at ISO 800

Damn that boat! However, if someone was really creative, I suppose they could create some gradient shading that would make it look like the boat was disappearing into a dark bank of fog. There's actually a moonlight crop in there somewhere, without the boat, but it wouldn't have a lot of content to draw one's attention.

I think you would have to send that over to the Post Processing forum where all those Photoshop gurus reside. They may actually have some other ideas on how to make this work as well.

Excellent Suggestion. We don't want Searcher to get lonely over there. :-D
