I took these on 11/10/2013 at the Portland Arch Nature Preserve in Indiana, not to far from Attica. It's a beautiful place especially in the fall. Though it's also nice with snow on the ground (makes for nice up lighting on the rock formations). Just thought I would put these out for your enjoyment of scenery in the Hoosier state. :)
This is the only natural arch in the state of Indiana.

Great set! I like'em all. I'm sure that your intent was not to tell a mineralogy tale, however I'm keen on knowing is that rock formation granite or sandstone? The lighting of the day makes my analysis ambiguous at best. Do you know? I have seen some evidence that the "Canadian Shield" goes all the way through Indiana, but I haven't seen this kind of quality pictures to inspect as evidence.
OK, yeah, I'm a rock geek, nature nerd.
Still, very nice set! I hope to go there one day.

These are outstanding NikonJohn! Of course I could be a little biased...I'm from Indiana too. Have you taken any shots of Turkey Run or Shades?

Thanks for posting these, John. We've been in Lafayette for 3 1/2 years but I've never made it to the Portland Arch Nature Preserve. A friend of mine asked me this summer if I had ever been out there. Now, having seen your photos, I'll have to add it to my list of places to see.

Thanks katwilphoto I appreciate it.
It's sandstone, I don't think there is much granite in Indiana, or if there is I don't know where it's at. Southern Indiana is well known for it's sandstone, there is a lot of it in monuments in Washington D.C. There is another sandstone gorge near this one called "Falls Creak Gorge Nature Preserve" nicknamed "The Potholes" due to it's unique formations in the bed of the creek where the canyon narrows. You can see a picture of the potholes at my first post here: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-10064-1.html Also nearby is the waterfall in Williamsport, it's the highest waterfall in Indiana. Though depending on the rainfall amounts there is not always water going over the falls. All three can be seen in one day and are all quite lovely.
If you think you might get to this area sometime contact me in advance and if I can get away I will play tour guide for you. :)

Thanks Beagleman, I appreciate it! Yes Turkey Run and Shades are not all that far from West Lafayette and I have been there many times and probably have thousands of photos from there. Right next to Shades (parking is in Shades now) is Pine Hills Nature Preserve. It is also unique with it's "backbone" trails. Seems I need to do some more posts of some of these other places. :)

Thanks Jim, glad you liked them! I love showing off the beautiful places in Indiana. You can also see "The Potholes" and the waterfall in Williamsport on the same day. All three are relatively short trails. There is also a short waterfall upstream from the potholes at Falls Creek Gorge Nature Preserve. Warning though, the footing around the potholes in the streambed can be quite slippery. I think it's the clay in the "rock" there.

Beautiful John! Love the fall colors. I'd have a hard time picking a favorite...really like #3, the arch is in such detail. I'll have to go check this place out.
