You have the camera set to remote? Press the button near the shutter button that looks like a few pages of paper, roll the dial to an icon that looks vaguely like a remote.
S, H1, H2, time, remote time, remote.

I use the remote for my D7000...Nikon's remote...the store accidentally gave me Promasters, too glitchie...then when I got the Nikons version I had no problem....also depending where the Infared reciever is on the camera....you may not have the ability to use it on one side or the back. the D7000 has a reciever on the front and back, the left front side of the camera has a small dead area.

Wayne,
First question is what is the maker of the remote, if they are those cheapos from Asia, I understand why they don't work. Buy the ones made by the manufacturer, they are the best and usually work. Pay attention to the usually. LOL

Have a Very Merry Christmas.

With my camera (d3000) you have to go back and reset it to remote if you turn the camera off. It does not hold on to that setting like it does other settings.

The "real deal" NIKON remote is cheap enough if you didn't get a true NIKON product.
