What could I have done differently? This is one of the first birds taken with sx50

It looks to me like the spot focus was on the wing feather-- not on the eye and the neck feathers. Also could use some fill flash to open up the detail in that area. BUT perhaps you were just too far away?

I don't honestly know. The detail, the focus, the composition is all top notch. Perhaps we need to call in Nikonian72. He can always find something wrong in a photo. LOL

Birdie,

I agree with the above post and would like to add that when you view this photo during playback on your SX50 you can use the display button to actually see at what point the camera focused on. The EXIF data of the photo cannot be viewed, so I cannot comment on whether your setting's may have influenced the focus...exposure time, focal length etc.

An additional critique is that this is probably not the most pleasing position for the bird to be in. 8-)

I love seeing a bird from his tail feathers. It's not the norm, but I think that's why I like it. A new perspective.

Unlike Nightski, I think looking up a bird's stern is just a bit kinky. But I agree, if the focus had been on the bird's eye, this might have worked better.

I'll give you the the eye focus thing, Bob, but are you calling me kinky?

You know, everyone likes a baby's bum...why not a bird's bum. I thinks it's precious.

Nightski, I would never presume to label you, personally, as kinky (beside, I don't know you well enough to make that determination). I just know of all the beautiful cardinal photos I have viewed on this forum, it's the first to come up from behind. It's different I grant you. I know this was probably shot with some telephoto, but if I were standing this close to the bird in real life, I'd be afraid of being within range of bird poop. On the other hand, the "over the shoulder" look is rather enticing.

I hope you know that I was having a bit of fun with you here, Bob. It's that Nightski sense of humor getting me in trouble again. :-D

Not to worry Nightski. You're verbally sparring with an ex-Sailor, so getting in trouble is not something you should worry about.

I like the unusual pose of this bird. Viewing the download there seems to be a lot of noise. Is this a major crop of a larger image, or is the ISO set too high?

The bird is underexposed. I opened it in Adobe Camera Raw and adjusted the exposure and used a Fill Light. The issues of focus and the bird's pose have already been addressed.

I'm not familiar with the SX50, but I'm pretty sure you can use exposure compensation to get a better result.

This was a very heavy crop. As far as his rear sticking out, that's was the main reason I liked it. If someone could do an out of bounds,I bet it would be good. I have forgotten what app does it. Nightski glad you like the bird's bum.
