Thinking about selling my canon 70-200 2.8 version 1 and buying the version 2. The " trade" up will cost me about 1200$ . Has anyone made this upgrade and did they feel it was worth it? I currently shoot with a 60d and a 6d. Thanx ahead of time for your replys!!
Ask MtShooterg, he has a camera shop and might possibly work out a trade with you + some Cash

If you are asking about going from a f2.8 to a f2.0 lens, there is not enough gained to even think about. Learn about lenses and "f" stops. Save your money. What type of photography do you do?

LOL, maybe you should learn about lenses.
Then you would know how dumb your answer is.

Google "DxO lens comparisons." Select those lenses and then select the cameras you will be using. Also, Google one lens vs the other.
My opinion is that a new lense from a major maker is probably better than their previous model. It's just a matter of the ease with which you can part with the money.
EDIT: I had to try it myself.

Pkfish,
Are you a professional photographer? Here is an excellent review of the version II lens, which compares the changes to the version I lens.
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_70-200_2p8_is_usm_ii_c16/2It explains the improvements made to the version II lens well, and there are enough improvements made to get many professionals to have upgraded.
I am an amateur and am glad so many upgraded, it allowed me to buy an already excellent lens at a good price used!
If you are a pro go for it, if not, I can think of other things to spend my money on.

With Nikon the Version upgrade of that very focal length gave me 2 things for about the same $1200 extra bux. A newer version of the lens, and a whole extra stop of VR. Optically, they were the same.
I did not see an increase in IQ even when pixel peeping. I wont be upgrading to another version of the same lens until I bust it or there happens to be a massive leap in engineering. I found no real value in the upgrade, you may find this to be the opposite.

He's talking about upgrading to a new version of the same f/2.8 lens, not going from f2.8 to f/2.
If you are a amateur, it sounds like you are suffering from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). But, if you are making money with your photography, and actually pay taxes on your income, go for it. The cost of the new lens will be a deduction on your taxes. Remember, the IRS will allow a deduction for any item in your business, that will either enhance your income, or protect it. For a amateur, the version II does not give you enough for the money, just adjust your ISO. If ver I was good for your style of photography, it is still good enough. BTW that "L" lens is a stellar lens, with great low light image quality.

I have not read tests but did upgrade from ver I . The new lens has nicer bokeh wide open probably due to blade count, faster focusing and seemingly a bit sharper. An excellent lens but so was the version I so only you can determine if the cost of the upgrade is worth the cost. For most, me included, probably not but I love the lens

Lighthouse, I do not punish the ignorant, for we were all ignorant once, and in other areas still are.
But yes, that was ignorant.

PK, I'm sure your answers will be all over the place. So look at it a little different.
That lens, regardless of the extra money, will probably never be worth less than 10% less than what you paid for it.
In ten years, you may have rented it for a few hundred dollars, if you dont MAKE money.
It's not always a matter of looking at the straight costs. Not to mention using the latest state of the art equipment. In nine years, sell it, and get the mklll, that's when it will come out.
It's only money, and I'll bet when you trade-in your car, you'll loose an obscene amount.
Just my 2cents.

I have the mark I and do not think it worth the extra money to upgrade to the mark II. Yes, it probably focuses a bit faster and it will probably work better mated to the 1.4x III than the mark I mated to a 1.4x II but I doubt you'd see any difference in the end resulting pixels. It may also be a tad lighter in weight but I don't have any problems hoisting up the mark I since I'm used to hand holding a 500mm f/4 weighing in at 8.5lbs.
Thanx for your replys. I am a very amateur photographer and I do suffer from GAS.
