Does this work for you as minimalist? Better with or without the bokeh? Any other comments welcomed. COMPOSITION only, please. No need to discuss technical image quality here :)

Thanks so much!

Works for me. I like the first in color better.

I like bokeh whenever and wherever and I like the color version better.

I like the first one and definitely bokeh in.

minimalist composition is mostly done using negative space instead of broken.

Actually, for a minimalist rendition, I would edit out the bokeh rings. But do it in color.

Composition suggestion....crop a bit from the bottom so the dragonfly is not overpowered by the hexagon flares. He's a bit lost and when I scroll so the bottom is shorter, the dragonfly is more the subject...and that little bit of brown on the blade of grass. I think it qualifies as minimalist...but the bokeh detracts.

I think Bob is right for the minimalist shot. I would keep a copy of you shot it though. The bokeh rings are lovely, you've caught the light on the dragonfly perfectly, and it's one of those "money" shots. IMNO

I suspect that "minimalist" and "negative space" are two slightly different, occasionally intersecting things. I DO think this qualifies as "minimalist" as I understand it, and that therefore the bokeh rings are "OK" for the genre, but that said I think they distract anyway. Compositionally I think it's otherwise nailed. I like the greater space in front of the dragonfly—gives her space to take off. the blade leans into the composition. MAAaaaybe I'd quietly clone out the rings. Or not. I like it! (Oh, almost forgot—color, definitely!)

I prefer the color image...it's more dynamic...I also like the bokeh...kind of a halo over the dragonfly...vry nice capture

I love it with the bokeh, but you could make two versions. If you want to enter this photo into a minimalism competition, enter the version without the rings. But the bokeh is delightful, and I think this image has much more warmth, interest and impact in color.

It doesn't work for me-- but that's just my personal view. Here's a link that might help.

Thank you Heirloom and LRF for your time and comments. I appreciate it! St3v3M provided several excellent links in his announcement of this week's contest theme. Still confusing at times :)

I'm going to throw out a little different point of view on this, and it's just my humble opinion and completely subjective...

It looks to me like you're using bokeh for a balancing factor for composition and giving it too much importance. It seems to compete a little too much with your subject. I'm wondering how it would look if you subdue the bokeh, crop part of the right so the head of the dragonfly is on the right third "line," and take some off the bottom so you don't have so much negative space there.

Trying drawing the number 7 on a piece of paper with the bottom and sides at the same ratio as your crop factor and see where the placement works best for balance. That might help you decide before you go to any extra editing effort.
