Nikon vs Canon, what about Pentax and Sony?
I am about to update my camera and would like to hear more on "the other brands". I know about smaller market share and concern over availability of lenses, aftert market products, higher cost etc. Any other reason I show stick with the big two. I'm an avid amateur.

Pentax and Sony make some nice stuff. The new Sony mirrorless cam is supposed to be 'the next big thing'. Pentax (Asahi) lenses are on the whole very good, I have three or four old MF ones from the 80s that are very nice. Google is your friend.
Pentax cameras are still available and are excellent and expensive. Sony I don't hear that much about, even in por circles. The best thing about Nikon and Canon is availability and amount of people using them. You can ask any question about these two brands and receive tons of answers. Also, on Flicker with 51million subscribers, and about 6 billion images uploaded to date, the vast majority of images were created by the big two. My little D40 alone has uploaded 65 million photos. It's great to consider other brands, but it's good to be practical too.

Although Nikonfan has some interesting arguments, I don't think that sheer numbers mean anything in this dogfight. Sony's not going anywhere. Pentax probably isn't either, I don't know who their parent Co. is but they've been around for decades. It doesn't really make any difference TO YOU that 75% of the shots on Flickr or anywhere else are taken by Canon or Nikon. Practicality only covers post-sale maintenance, and like I said, I don't think Sony is going anywhere. Best bet is to handle the various offerings and see which feels good in your hands. Once you get above the entry-level toys, pretty much every DSLR is technologically adequate.
It's not the camera, anyway. It's You.
I have both, 2ea Sony DSLR's, one is the new SLT type
(see thru mirror) and love it.
I also have 2ea Pentax DSLR cameras and they perform very well.
Both of these brands are a great value for the money.
Sony has many,many lens available.
Pentax has several very good lens.
3rd party lens are quite common.
Both makers cameras have internal vibration control, which
makes lenses much cheaper. Nuff said..
Pentax and Sony make great cameras. So do Nikon and Canon. The best advice I ever got was to chose the camera that your friends use so that you can try out lenses, ask questions and help each other out. That's what I did and I'm happy that i followed that advice.

Just out of curiosity, why do you say that Sony and Pentax aren't going anywhere? Sony's SLT line seems to be getting excellent reviews, though some of their other DSLRs don't fare well. I'm less familiar with Pentax.
My first Slr was a pentax H3v in the late 60's and made tons of wonderful images,100 of which are being scanned as we speak. Somewhere between film and digital I lost track of pentax and wound up with the Nikon. I only have good things to say about them in the 60,s.

Jim,
I happen to like you answer the best, handle the cameras then decide. I handed my 1Ds to my brother and he said who the hell wants to walk around with a lead weight. He is not a photographer, enough said.
Have a Very Merry Christmas.
