I am looking for a D7100 body only. It seems the refurbished ones are about $200 less than the new ones. Do I run into any problems by saving the money?

Most around here will tell you that you are actually getting a better deal by getting a refurb. When they refurbish a camera they do an extensive check on it to see what problems it may have and the fix them all.

So how do I determine who did the refurbishing?

I'd have to agree with Robin...you should have no trouble with a factory referb camera/lens as long as your buying it from a reputable dealer...Adorama...B&H.

The manufacturer does the refurbishing. If who you are dealing with is licensed with Nikon as a dealer that means Nikon has done the refurb. So perhaps I should ask who you are looking at buying the refurb from and that can help us tell you if we know who you are dealing with is a dealer for Nikon?

I was a fan of refurbished cameras until I got my D7100. It had 1250 clicks on it, not happy about that. Other then that it looked new. I'm thinking of getting a refurbished D800 but because of that it has to be a lot cheaper then the list price. As the prices stand for the D800 being only $400 less for a refurb I hesitate.

I intend to buy the D7100 from. Camera Camera, a licensed Nikon dealer. They only charge $940 net and they include a 32GB memory card!
I thought if Nikon refurbished it there should be no actuations on it--is that correct?

If you go to a Nikon dealer, can they tell you what the shutter count is before you buy it?

Factory Refurbished is like new and was said above may even be better since it has received individual attention from a technician. Buy it from one of the "name" sources such as B&H and you can't go wrong. ;)

I have bought three Nikon refurbs and was happy with all of them. I still have two. They came in new condition and work flawlessly.

If you do you may want to get from Cameta or Adorama so you can get their extended warranty to one year. The refurb only carries a 90 day warranty. It is free from Cameta and about $8 from Adorama.

I am surprised they are already available on the D7100.

They need to shoot to test it. But I think they might reset it because mine did indeed come with zero.

My refurb d800 came in new condition. I'd rather see 1200 clicks on it than zero.

As some noted you are actually better off with a refurb because it has been given individual attention.

Good analogies. The manufacturers refurbished cameras compare well to the factory certified used cars from companies like BMW and Toyota.

The others seem more like buying used camera equipment...a more problematic adventure.

In fact I would rather and have bought most gear pre owned.

1. the majority of users look after their gear
2. good shops have a reputation to uphold and would not last long selling bad pre owned
3. most gear comes from mr/mrs must have,, must have the latest camera/lens/tripod, and upgrade for no real reason, so you get a pre owned, mint, boxed, camera/lens etc with guarantee
