Things at the lake here have been pretty slow ... usually migrating ducks have put in an appearance by Nov. But a few days ago I was sitting by the edge of the lake and heard a bird calling. I looked up and thought I saw a kestrel headed straight toward me .... and he was chasing a kingfisher. I think it is a female?
I've watched a lot of kestrels chase each other around as a territorial thing. But this was different. It looked to me like the kestrel really wanted to kill the kingfisher. I couldn't believe the dogfight. The kingfisher is much more maneuverable though and would do a little fishing when she had a lead on the kestrel. I don't know how I managed to get them both in the same frame .... but I did get one. The focus was on the kingfisher.
The kestrel eventually gave up and the kingfisher made another pass on my end of the lake.
These aren't great photos by any means .... but thought I'd share them as one of the more unusual things I've seen.
You were so fortunate to get these shots of TWO lightning fast birds!
I only know how to ID female kingfisher by the band of rust color across breast.
