I have the Nikon D50 and two lens - 18-50mm Sigma that says for Nikon AF D For Digital DC and the 70-300 mm that says for Nikon AF D for APO DG. My D50 manual says my lens mount is Nikon F with AF coupling and AF contact and "CPU lenses (particularly G and D lenses are recommended for use. Both of my lenses do work with my camera. I am now looking at the D5200 Nikon and the specs say lens mount is Nikon F bayonet mount. Will my two lenses work with the D5200? And if not, which Nikon in the $1000 and under class will? My last SLR was Nikormat and totally manual so I am struggling here trying to learn the DSLRs.

I thought Nikon mounts were consistent to the brand - but not to say all Nikon lenses work on all Nikon cameras. So I'll be iterested in what the experts say.

The D50 has an AF drive motor in the body and will use ANY Nikon mount AF lens. The D5200 does NOT have that drive motor so it will only AF with Nikons AF-S type lenses, Sigmas use an "HSM" designation on their version of the AF-S lens which has an AF motor inside the lens. If your Sigmas do not have HSM in their description on the barrel then they will not AF with the D5200 body.

Thank you so much for that information. My sigmas do not have HSM designation so that rules out the D5200. Back to the Adorama catalog!

Look for a D7000, better camera anyway for very little more money. The non-HSM Sigmas will AF on it too.

Interesting! I was just looking at the D7000 on the Adorama site and refurbished by Nikon it is $649. Very tempting!

Mine are mostly AI, they are the reason I have always stayed with Nikon. They are actually superb lenses,
my 24 f2.8, 55 f3.5 micro, 50 f1.4 and a few more, oldies but goodies!

I'm a big fan of focusing motors in the body.

At roughly half the cost when new, that's a very good deal, and it seems to be the standard refurb price. See what kind of a warranty different sellers offer. Nikon offers just 90 days on refurbs.
