Brought to mind the biblical story of Noah who appealed to God because the snakes would not multiply. God instructed Noah to build a table of logs and place the snakes upon it and he did and to his surprise the snakes began to multiply.
Noah went to God and said I don't understand why are they now multiplying?
To which God said: Noah, everyone knows adders multiply using log tables!

That takes me back to when I was just starting high school algebra (way before calculators) and we were introduced to "logarithms". I struggled mightily with them and for the life of me could not understand what practical use they might ever have so one day I asked our math teacher, "Do logarithms have any useful purpose other than to make our lives miserable?" and he answered, "No, that's pretty much it. We just like to see you suffer."
For some reason that made perfect sense to me and I just accepted it on that basis and somehow managed to learn them."
