Hi Jerry, It all depends on how they write the policy for you. I carry around about $4000 worth of tools in the back of my truck. And then the camera gear too. I have to show pictures of everything I want them to cover. But if something gets stolen, the replacement is for new, because that is how I make my living. It cost a little more, but well worth it not to worry about it all the time. And they told me to put an alarm on the truck to get a better price. And that brought the price down pretty good. It will give you a heart attack if you are standing around it when they break in. :):) I have only had it go off once so far. Someone bumped into the trailer hitch and set it off. I heard it from the back of the Walmart store.:):) Talk about getting out to the truck in a hurry.:):)

I always do the same thing - on the floor and covered, but a thief will have enough sense to look through the car.

As for the reimbursement, I'm surprised that they allowed that much. I would have thought they would take the original price and depreciate it. After all, if you wanted to sell the camera, you would not get the purchase price.

I have two bad experiences with State Farm and they are no longer considered for anything. I have not bought insurance yet but, it is on the list so I would like to hear some thoughts on this from the Hog community.

Take a look a Travelers; its where I have my insurance. Caveat - Along with other companies I was a Travelers agent until I retired.

Using a remote to lock your car doors is not always a good idea. Thieves have devices that detect the signal and can use it to unlock the doors after the operator walks out of sight. Your doors may have been locked and then unlocked using that technology. The best way to lock your doors in public areas like parking lots is to manually push the lock button as you exit the car. Same for putting things in the truck. DO NOT do it in the parking lot in plain view of thieves. Put valuables in the trunk BEFORE arriving at your destination. Saves a lot of heartache and form filling later.
Using a remote to lock your car doors is not alway... (show quote)

Update: State Farm sent the check to cover the body and lens, but I had approached the Maryland Insurance Commission and they are dealing with State Farm to try and resolve this. I have not cashed the check because I felt that to do so would indicate that I accepted the settlement. I just got off the phone with the Commissioner's office and while State Farm has supplied some of the information needed, they are awaiting additional information. The woman that I spoke with said that depositing the check did not constitute settlement and if additional monies were owed, State Farm would need to pay that separately. The check was for $3838.00 to cover the body and lens; I just ordered the 5D Mk III with a 24-105 f/4L, a Canon battery grip, a B & W UV filter and a Giotto LCD protector for $3,773.47, including next day shipping!! Great pricing at B & H!!
