Guardian of the Power Grid

Out in my neck of the woods, here in south central Illinois, where opossums deliver the mail, we take seriously the threat of terrorist attacks on our power grid. So we guard the poles with an austere sentinel... supplemented amenities being a mouse or two every once in a while.

Great shot, J. The resistor, doohickeys make for an interesting composition. Just wandering if the top right main line were removed if that would be an improvement. Is that a Peregrine?

Well, I'll tell you what, magicray, you're more than welcome to climb that pole and attempt removing that top main line if you want, but be forewarned that bird don't take too kindly to terrorists messing with his pole. He'd pluck your top right eye out in a New York minute. As to whether it's a Peregrine or not... I haven't a clue. I do have a couple of bird books, but have a hard time determining the difference between similar-appearing birds.

We're taking bids, Heirloom, from any and all parties willing to attempt climbing that pole and removing the top-right line... you know... for aesthetics purposes. You interested?

If you want me to take it out of there for you, I'd be happy to. Just post the image with the "store original" box checked and I will get out my surgical tools. :P

Have to admit, I've never seen a power pole wired up like that. Cool shot. At least your sentinel works for peanuts...er, mice. ;-)

Nice shot. My only concern is that the pole wiring is so out of date and a danger to wild life or for that matter to public welfare it should be updated to 21st century standards that’s a crying shame no one has griped about it! Con-ED should be ashamed.

no, no, no,... we're not talking PhotoShop here; we're talking about spurs on your boots, belt around the pole, tool pouch slung from a loop, and up you go.

So sorry, j. erwin, can't help you there. My surgery practice is entirely virtual.

Richard, my friend, we're talking about Cumberland County Illinois, which in 1842 was still a part of Coles County. But in 1843 Coles County abandoned this part of their territory and Cumberland County was formed. And we've been behind the proverbial eight-ball ever since. That pole IS the most modern of our rural electrical service provided by a steam-powered generator located in behind Gertrude Kingery's hog barn--the first quarter mile of electrical service to the county being the barbed wire fence that runs up over the hill across the creek and out to the dirt road. You can't really get back there at the time being because last spring the bridge washed out. We're working on it.

Thanks for letting me know about how old those pole and wiring is. I was amazed at what you show in your photo. Back in the early 60's I worked for PG&E in northern Calif. I was surprised to see of the same type of wiring like yours even then.
