I love looking closely at rock formations. Am thinking about doing a series called Little Worlds and Secret Places. I would be interested in your feedback.

What is your thought on using mono on this?

I'd like to see the color version.

For me it is all about forms and light and contrast. I thought the color version was pretty boring. But here it is. Maybe someone else can work with it and bring more out.

Hi Charryl, I enjoyed the color version more because 1)it is lighter and you can see more detail and 2) the contrast of the warm and cool color palette is pleasing. I think the b&w version looks a little dark. If you adjust brightness and contrast to get a full range of white-to-black, more detail will show. Nice rock photo!

Me, I'm a color guy. I used NIK's Viveza 2 to up the structure about 80% and used the Shadows slider toward the dark side. I then used NIK's Color Efex Pro to increase the Dynamic Contrast just a hair and stacked on a Darken/Lighten Center filter to add an off-center source of light in the upper left hand corner, which throws interesting "shadows' on the rest of the structure. All these filter changes I then fade a bit later by blending their opacity levels with the original.

But this makes me wonder ..... at what point do we take a radical departure from photography and get obsessed in post processing, creating artwork out of someone's original idea. I don't know, but neither do I worry about it too much ..... I like the revision, but I fully realize this caters to my preferences, and not everybody sees the world as I do.

This, then, is my vision of Charryl's Little Worlds. I suppose one could darken to taste to set a mood (as did the photographer's B&W rendition).

charryl, sounds like a great project very much worth pursuing. It is a personal thing that I try not to rework other peoples images. Without knowing the intent or objective of the artist it would be hard for me to capture the same feeling they are trying to achieve. With that being said, I would like to see what a little less contrast would do the to the rock formation. Would it give the same feeling or detract? Again great idea and I hope you pursue it.

I prefer the color version as well for the reasons that Heirloom tomatoes gave with the adjustments that Bob did. I suspect this is more like what the eye would have seen.

Would you mind if I put a HDR version if you want contrast

This is an alternate view of reality ..... keeping the spirit of "Little Worlds", I was struck how the topmost section of this photo actually looked like prehistoric caves, or a sheltered ledge that might have housed a whole tribe. Imagine this on a grand scale instead of miniature. (Note: this actually looks better in thumbnail than in download)

I like this crop very much. Thanks for opening up my thinking.
