Salt Water Marsh-- Can I use a 2x Extender

I took these with a Canon 7D, Canon 300mm f4 with a Canon 1.4 extender. I had to really crop these to get them in close which brought up the noise level. I was wondering if anyone had use a Canon 2x extender with this lens and camera? My main concern is the softness of the focus. I know that I will lose f stops. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to go to Africa in 2015 and want to start working on a good lens set up.

You may lose a couple f-stops, but you probably could make up for them with the ISO and SS.. Lots of time to practice before your great planned trip. Practice,

Hi Jam...I have that exact same set up...I don't do well with my 1.4 extender on. I don't use a tripod..So it's a little too heavy for me with the extender on it. Swamp Gator loves the 300mm with the 1.4x...he doesn't recommend using the. 2x extender though. BTW...nice set...love the Kingfisher!

The conventional wisdom is that 2X extenders cause a major degradation in image quality. If wildlife photography is an important part of your hobby, save your money and buy a Sigma 150-500mm. The cost of the 2x extender is a significant part of the cost of a very good lens for wildlife.
