use custom features to enable BBF, it should be in your camera manual.
Great for fast action shooting , sports, BIF etc

Many of us use this feature - I find it really helpful. The set up for it varies by camera. You need to deactivate the shutter release button from focusing and set up one of the buttons on the back of the camera to do the focusing - typically the AF-On or AE-L/AF-L button. The set up is found in the custom menus.

I liked it at first, as it made it easier to re-compose after focusing; but I wear glasses, so I would get a smear from my thumb knuckle every time. Just a warning :)

I hate to say this because it annoys me when other do but you might want to try the "Search" function above on this one. There have been several lengthy discussions. I'm not discouraging you from starting your own just suggesting it for additional information.

I have read up on it and have to say I'm not convinced there is any value in trying to teach my fingers to go yet another place. Proper use of the AE/AF lock feature and half depressing the shutter works for me. On Nikons it takes some research on how to set things to do what you want but once you are dialed in it can be hard to change.

Google the name/model of your camera and then "back button focus." I do BBF exclusively and will never go back.

Once you've set up your camera, watched some YouTube videos and played with BBF for a bit, come back to these two tips:

1. For portraits, use AF-S, center focus. Focus on the closest eye by pressing on the back button (on my Nikon D600, it's the AE-L/AF-L button) and then RELEASE IMMEDIATELY; recompose and then press the shutter release. As long as your distance from your subject doesn't change and your DOF is set correctly, the eye will remain focused.

2. For moving subjects, use AF-C. Focus on your intended subject by pressing the back button, but don't release until you have your subject in the frame where you want it. Keep the BBF mashed down until you've snapped the shot!

I use back button focus and am glad I do. I can focus, recompose, and shoot. Before learning about bbf, the camera would refocus every time I pressed the shutter button, even if I was taking two photos of the same subject one right after the other (no, I don't spray and pray but there are times when I want to shoot three or four photos of the same subject at the same time).

I don't want to appear to be crabby, but was there really a purpose to reposting this thread question again after you posted it just a few days ago, and where it already has an active discussion in progress?

The comments above are good.
I've used it for two years now. It's great and my ratio of in focus photos have gone us since the camera isn't trying to focus as you hit the shutter.
It does take awhile to get used to.
