A few from the mudflats today. For the backlit avocet, I actually remembered to use AE Lock to expose just for the bird. Actually a bit more than just the bird, since I used partial metering. I really need to remember to use AE lock for backlit scenes. Makes a big difference. I saw the difference in the field because I took some shots without using AE lock before I remembered, and they birds were way underexposed. The avocet shot is heavily cropped.
The snowy egrets are only cropped a little. Here I spot metered, and used +1 Exposure Compensation to try to get good exposures of a white bird.
Im learning, bit by bit.

Globetrekker, those low angle shots on the water with the sun in front of you are tough, not only for exposure but for autofocus as well. You did as good a job as possible under the circumstances with the Avocet. Those kinds of shots almost never make satisfying pictures unless the birds are quite close to you. The Egrets are well done. The light is enveloping and your exposure compensation was exactly on target. Keep practicing and knowing what to do when confronted with difficult exposure situations will become second nature.
Thanks for posting! Keep on shooting!

I really enjoyed seeing these since I've been trying to get the same kinds of images. Where did you spot these?
Very nice egrets.
Thanks, Vicky. Saw these at Point Isabel (in the East Bay).
