Very pretty little bird,, I have never seen one before!
Hey Joe, (I'm stifling a Jimi Hendrix moment here.) Could you give me a Readers Digest version of your settings, please? Is it safe to assume you have some aperture priority setting going on?
I few years ago I bought a re-furbed D5000 to save a few bucks and I'm thinking it was a serious mistake. I spend a lot of time in auto mode but it isn't providing the kinds of shots I want to post.
Great pictures of a colorful woodpecker. Yes, please post your settings and approx. distance from feeder.

Both at ISO 100 about 30 feet from the feeder. Fill flash with SB900 and Better Beamer. 420 MM w/Sigma 300 f2.8 and 1.4 extender. Tripod mounted with wireless trigger, manual focus. Aperture Priority and spot meter. Raw converted in Capture NX2.
#1: f5.6 1/60 cropped to about 50%.
#2 f.6.3 1/160 cropped to approx. to 25% of original.
They will grab and run unless I feed them shelled peanuts.
