Sometimes I like this one...sometimes I don't. Would like your input. Hit me with your best shot.

I'm going to suggest a tighter crop-- on the left right just inside the small uprising and then on the bottom to remove the greenery along the bottom. Just a thought.... Oh, and maybe try it as a monochrome and up the red & blue to accentuate the white clouds. Sorta what one would get with an 80A filter with B&W film....

The photo follows the rule of 3rds with the tree at the lower left intersection. The cloud forms the only angle in the photo. Although the subject matter may not be overly exciting (a lone tree) what I like about this photo is the tenshion that is formed between the tree and the cloud. It appears as if the cloud is about to pounce on the unsuspecting tree. The photo exacts an emotion from me.
I suggest you keep it.

I like the simple composition and the friendly-looking cloud. I found myself wanting to see more detail in the bright areas. Here is a slightly darker version. I don't know if it is improved.

Thanks, HT. I played with that, too. I just can't seem to make something more of this shot. Appreciate your help and input.

I will try that. Maybe that's what it is. Thanks for your suggestions.

I agree. That's why I probably keep going back to it. Thanks for the comment.

Here's my version. I'm not that skilled at monochrome-- but essentially I cropped and then adjusted the green to lighten the tree, and the red and blue to darken the sky. I added grain to give texture to the cliff.

Wow! That's amazing. Totally changes the picture. I like it very much. I'll play with the NEF file. Thanks so much.

Thanks, JC. Looks like the vote is to keep it but work on it. I will do just that.

If the detail in the leaves is sharp then its a "keeper".
Not everyone's cup of tea but then again, what is.
It has form and function.
Do I detect a fraction overprocessing with a slight halo around the tree?

I would darken the ground slightly and increase the detail in it somehow. You probably have your own way of doing that. I would be careful of not to bring too much colour in by doing that though and it might also need the ground desaturating afterwards.

If your going to do a monochrome which I think this picture lends itself to it very well. After the change I would crop the dunes and darken it either with the curve or adjustment and finish it off with a little dodge and burn.Don't forget to blur slightly the line left by the crop tool.I think you'll be pleasantly surprise.I'm a big fan of B&W .P.S. sometimes if you do a high pass after with the setting at 1.5 to 2.5 and vivid it helps the B&W a lot.Good luck and let us see the finished product

Definitely don't toss it. Every once in a while you will think about it, then is the time too look at it again. You may have seen another image that has bought it to mind and given given you inspiration.
Don't toss it.

Graham

I think if it had been taken at a different angle, Charryl. This could be a really cool negative space photo with just that one tree if were approached differently. I suppose you would have had to hike through that canyon to to get that. :-D
