Here are two finished photos taken by two different methods.
The first method uses a focusing rail, where the whole camera is advanced forward .25mm per shot.
The second Photo was taken using Helicon Remote.
It is a software that takes a set of images for a stack.
It does this by refocusing progressively between shots. Both photos were stacked in Helicon Focus.
I can not see a great difference between the rail method and the focus adjust method!?!? Can you?

My eye tells me the first is slightly closer and more detailed. the second has highlights that seem a touch to strong.

Yes I think you are right, the second one is more exposed then the first.
What about focus bands? do you see any difference in them or aberrations around the edges?
The first image was a stack of 60 shot the second was done with about 20.
Actually the first does have a small amount of red banding that does not seem to be there on no.2

When you say, red banding are you talking about the red
spots in the casting pockets evident between the trunk and the ear?
No Looking closely you can see a fine red banding evident around the edge of the ears and head mainly.
