Pretty open ended question. I f you are cheap like me and want a good lens, then look for Minolta AF lenses anywhere. Sony themselves make great lenses. Even their kit lenses are good. If you have the money, then go Carl Zeiss.

Al Minolta AF lenses fit the alpha bodies.

You're right. At this point I'm not sure of what alternatives there are outside of Sony.

Graig's list, consignment shops, thrift stores, pawn shops, etc... I bought my Carl Zeiss lens for my Sony at a pawn shop for $35.00

Oh, and don't forget camera shops that sell used equipment. A couple of times I bought the whole camera (a Minolta Maxxum) for $10.00 at a consignment shop. I kept the lens and threw out the camera.

I did spend up once and bought my 75-300mm Sony lens from Sony brand new for $249.00 It is a good little lens. Most of my posting are shot with this lens. I also bought a new 50mm f1.8 prime lens from Sony. It too, is a great lens. I paid $149.00 from Sony direct. You won't see any super deals from a camera shop or Best Buy on new Sony lenses because Sony sets their price and that's that.

Are you replying to me? If so, next time click on the Quote Reply tab instead of the regular reply tab. I knwo, it is confusing.

Anyway to answer your question, most of my lenses are Minolta lenses and I use them a lot also. You should use google and even Ebay and read up on them. The are excellent lenses but Minolta had kit lenses also. Their good ones had all metal bodies for starters. My Carl Zeiss lens is a Minolta lens.

I recently bought an a77, and since then I've picked up several Minolta & Sigma lenses for Minolta. Just make sure they have the Maxxum mount (same as Sony alpha) and are not Rokkor, or D mount.

Go to www.dyxum.com/lenses/results.asp for a comprehensive list and ratings, then have fun shopping!

I am in the process of doing an inventory on my own Minolta lenses, and just sold my 28-70 2.8 on ebay, which was an excellent lens. If you'e interested, PM me, and I will get a list to you, but it may take a couple of days.-Ed

Your question is pretty vague, but here is what I can tell you.

Any Sony A-mount lens will fit their SLT line of cameras. In addition the Minolta A-mount lenses will also fit. Minolta started the A-mount when they came out with their Maxxum line of film cameras around 1985 or so. When Sony purchased Minolta in 2006 and started their Alpha camera series they chose to use the A-mount that Minolta had created. They stayed with the A-mount when the introduced the SLT series a few years later. Note that Minolta lenses that are not A-mount (which is any Minolta lens made prior to the introduction of the Maxxum line in 1985) will NOT fit the Sony A-mount cameras.
You also have many choices from Sigma and Tamron, which make lenses to fit other manufacturers cameras, including Sony. I have never used Tamron myself, but Sigma lenses are very good and significantly less expensive than Sony lenses of the same description and category.

I just found a Minolta AF 35-70mm (Mini-beercan) lens for $50. I bought it and love it does. You most likely can find this lens on ebay or amazon for about the same price. The Minolta AF 28-70mm lens is OK, look for the second generation of this lens (silver colored).
