Please advice on how to lighten the woodpecker so I can identify him. Shot was handheld using Canon SX50. Trying to identify the heron also. I think it's a Louisiana Heron but not sure. I use Elements 11 or Light room 4 for PP.

Regarding the woodpecker... If you shot this in raw, you can reclaim some of the highlights in post by increasing the midtone brightness, but at the expense of noise. Unfortunately, to keep the background at the current exposure level, you'll need another light source for the woodpecker. I suspect you are too far away for this with a flash or a reflector? Next time try spot metering on the woodpecker and deal with the background in post.

In PSE11, if you go to Lighten and Darken and lighten the shadows all the way, you might be able to see the markings on the woodpecker well enough to identify it.

Hi Zuzanne.

I believe your woodpecker is a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and the heron is a Tricolored Heron.

Thanks for your help. I will try your tips.

Sorry for putting both photos in same post. I didn't realize it was limited to one.

Zuzanne, I have a rework of your woodpecker (sapsucker?). Would you like me to post it? It's not ever gonna be great. There is a lot of fringing, but the colors and patterns are visible.

Can't help on the programs you use but from what I see I would venture to say it's a downy woodpecker.

Okay! Here you go. At least I think s/he's identifiable (I hope). Rework is really pretty embarrassing but it's the best I can do. I'm currently working on my skills.
