Thanks for the time and effort to make something from this image.

I will post my effort and see if it has improved the shot.

You're welcome. Your edit definitely makes the picture more engaging  .

Bruce, I'm really jealous we didn't have a chance at that photo here in the midwest. Congrats on being in the right place at the right time. Nice capture.

Here is my edited version. I obviously cropped it (tried a vertical first but thought it crowded the sun and lighthouse to the sides too much.) Lightened the shadows and increased luminance of the orange and yellow tones with a brush to bring out the reflection in the water.

It was a fun photograph to play with. Thank you.

Tried to increase the sun's reflection on the water

It's actually a nice shot, Bruce. I'd agree, it needs to be cropped, but the image is large enough to support that. It's your own photo, so I won't tell you where to make the cuts, that's your call, but I'd really chop this down to leave mainly the sun at upper right and the lighthouse at lower left. Maybe add a touch of saturation, play with your levels a bit, but again, your photo, your taste.

I think you are spot on. Rather being caught in the moment I should have used longer glass, or taken the 18-200 to the limit. I was thinking at the time the lighthouse would have brought a good dimension to the shot. This was not the case.

I fussed with it a bit and reposted, I may fiddle with it more and see what I can get out of it.

Thanks so much for your visit and suggestions.

Thank you for your time and expertise, Your rendition of this shot is much improved over what I posted.

It came to me that the lighthouse was superfluous and I will try cropping it out.
Thanks again for your suggestions!

Portrait orientation - crop for sun in upper right corner - select water lighten exposure - increase saturation and vibrancy - good capture

Appreciate the critique. I do see your point and will attempt to incorporate your ideas in my next edit.
Thanks again.

Thank you kindly, The conditions of the shoot were far from ideal, the striated cloud cover gave a brief period to catch the shot.

I took this at Captree Basin, The light house is Robert Moses lighthouse on Fire Island.
I was in the parking lot.

Overcast early flat light is tough.
Thanks for the comment and visit.

Hey Bruce! Check out today's Newsday (10/04/13) and look on page A6. There is a half page photo remarkably similar to your first edit! You coulda been a contender! :D

Oh....have to give a critique in this great new section. Okay, I think that first edit you made is beautiful and cuts to the chase. A well composed interesting image with great light. Well done.

BMac, Yesterday was my first day free in 2 months, I got up early and looked online to see when sunrise was due and to my amusement I found the eclipse was going to happen. I went to Captree Basin, a favorite sunrise location and there were no less than 50 shooters lined up.

It never occurred to me to shoot a shot to the papers! My dumbass!

Oh by the way the stripers are running, I went to Robert Moses to look for deer shots and the surf was pounding.

I went to lot 5 and the place was PACKED Some cat had 2 gorgeous stripers hauling them back to his car

stripers
stripers...
