I while ago I bought 24 Lithium Ion batteries for my flash. They are so expensive, I looked on Ebay for a vendor in Hong Kong and for 24 at a reasonable price and purchased them. I put a set in my flash about 2 months ago, I have used the flash many times, not sure how many shots, but will guess 400-500 and today I did a wedding, indoors and used the same flash with same batteries, took about 100 photos, flash still going strong. These batteries are amazing.

I always use Radio Shacks enercells. They charge in 15 minutes, take repeated charges and work well. I have been using these batteries for 5 years. I also keep the batteries in a plastic holder. When I switch batteries I put the in the holder upside down to indicate they are used. I keep three of these holders in my bag when I go on shoots. I love them.

There must be a huge profit margin in batteries. I always buy rechargeables. They've gotten so much better than in the old nicad days.

About four or five years ago I discovered Eneloop batteries. These are a nickel metal hydride technology which means rechargeable and with no memory effects. They are designed and made by Sanyo.

What makes them remarkable is that they do not lose the typical 1% per day charge, you can have them sitting around for six months and still have an 80% charge in them. While they have a lower milliamp/hour rating than the nickel metal hydride versions they seem to last a lot longer on a charge particularly in a flash. And they're a lot cheaper than lithium. You also don't need a special charger, any charger that deals with the nickel metal hydride batteries will charge these too.

The problem with them is that Sanyo seems to keep them a big secret. They seem almost impossible to find. It took me a few months before I was able to find a retailer locally that stocked them. Since then there has been the odd competing brand too under different trade names. This battery technology is sold charged. You can actually use them out of the box. So that's the best way to tell if they're the enelook formula or something else.

When I finally found a source and tested them myself I promptly bought a couple of dozen. Not only do I have them in the flash I have spares in all my camera bags. I charge them once or twice a year and the rest of the time they just sit around and wait until I need them. They're the most amazing rechargeable batteries I've found to date. I don't know how they might compare to the Lithium batteries, I hear Lithium is quite long lived but I can say in the longer term they're a lot cheaper than disposables.

The AA batteries I got are not rechargeable, they are like Alkaline and just throwaways. I just find it amazing they have lasted so long. The ones I got are AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium. So I was wrong when I said Li-Ion.
