I have a sigma 70 - 300 f:4-5.6 APO macro lens from a canon elan film camera. When I attached it to my Rebel XSi it worked for a few minutes and then I received an error message # 1 and suggested I clean the contacts. My question is : Should this lens work with my digital XSi.

1004, I don't know anything about Sigmas, but all EOS compatible lenses should work with any EOS system.
I would clean the contacts and give it another try.
Good luck

You do not give enough information. How can it work for a few minutes and then quit. When ever you use two pieces of camera equipment of different manufacturers together, you are on your own for help. Canon wont help you and Sigma, maybe.

That's a good question. I checked the contacts on the lens and they seemed to be in the same locations as the a canon lens except for the shape of one of the contacts. The fact that the lens worked at first is what I cannot understand.

Is the lens a good solid fit ? I also have the same two cameras and a Elan lens that has just enough play that it reacts the same way when on my Xsi...

I would PM MT Shooter ... he's the Sigma guy I would ask questions of.

I see no reason it wouldn't work on that camera. If I remember right that error is usually caused by dirty or corroded contacts. Sense you had it laying around or mounted to an old film camera it is a good possibility they are slightly corroded. Clean the contacts on the lens with a pencil eraser and try again.

You can call Canon and ask them if that is what the error is but do not mention you are trying to use a sigma lens. If they ask give them a Canon lens, it won't make a difference. I would clean the contacts first though, a lot less time to do that.

you're right, the lens has been laying around for a long time. I'll clean the contacts and give it another try. Thanks.
