This photo was taken by my husband at a beach wedding that we photographed. He loves the candids over the formals. This is the granddaughter of the bride taken after the wedding as the children were all playing in the sand. C&C requested.

I like this shot, in fact I looked at it for quite a while before I decided to offer a couple of comments - and granted, they might not help or improve the photo at all, but they are things I would probably have tried, so here goes: I'm not sure I like the horizontal crop, but, then again, maybe I do, it just depends on what you cropped out and I would probably have liked to have seen the top of her head and just a little more torso. I also would have tried to brighten her skin just a little to maybe separate it a little more from the background.

That's it from me. The emotion that you captured is priceless, I just want to ask her what she's thinking about and I want to feel just like she's feeling.

Linda,

This is one of those shots that almost works. If you had broken just one rule you would be ok. You really broke two rules.

1) You shot down on your subject. By itself this can work.

2) You don't show enough of the face to get an expression. The body does give somewhat of an expression.

This is one of those shots where you have the perfect setup but you have to think. That needs to happen fast and comes with experience.

If this shot were composed with the camera lower to the ground you would have solved the two problems while still capturing the mood. That's what should have happened here in my opinion. I am longing to see more of the child's face but left hanging wanting more.

The good news is you captured the essence of mood. Just not from the best perspective.

Keep up the good work you show real promise for identifying mood in a photo.

Russ

Thanks Jonsommer. I appreciate you taking the time and looking and for your comments. This is one of those photos that I have mixed feelings about, just not sure why. I appreciate your suggestions, and will try and see if they do improve the image.
THANKS again, Linda

Thanks Russ.
Appreciate your looking at the photo and your comments. I have watched what you post and try to learn from the comments you add. Your work is superb. I hope, with time and more experience, to be able to capture what you do.
Back to this one, you are right. I have learned that I need to get down to a lower level more often, but sometimes in the moment, that is forgotten. Kids change what they are doing so quickly. This is a photo that my husband took, and he is also still learning, so he is following this post along with me.
I appreciate your input and will keep this in mind for future use.
THANKS again, Linda
