I love to take pictures and I have been wanting a "whoodie-do" (pronounced who-dee-doo...lol) camera for a very long time. So, I thought the best advice for a camera purchase would come from a site such as this. I'm looking at Canon and Nikon. I've never owned either and this is going to be a major investment for me. Could I get some pros and cons from some folks who have actually used them for more than just a test run? Remember, I'm at entry level and don't speak the language very well yet. :) Thanks in advance for your time and your advice.

Something to think about…..

You might want to mention what kind of pictures you enjoy most…Action/Sports-Grandkids/Portraits-Flowers/Bugs/Close-up

Canon and Nikon are among the best, but they have models better suited for different types of photos. If weight is a consideration, you might want to look at the 4/3rd cameras.
Once you pick a camera-then your investment will really be in the lenses….which makes it very hard to switch brands later $$$$

I'm a Canon guy. I own two of their dslr cameras and am getting excellent results with both. One, the t1i, I do video with and getting excellent results there also.

Best of luck. It can be a long learning curve if you're really serious or just a quick learning session if you want to let the camera decide most things for you.

Which ever, welcome and enjoy!

I'm sorry. Yeah, I guess that would be helpful. I like to photograph my three beautiful boys and nature...trees, landscapes, flowers. And believe me, nature is much easier because it doesn't wiggle as much as my boys do. Thanks so much for the warm welcome and the advice y'all have already given.

Welcome angel. My standard suggestion is to check the reviews online and then try to find a store (Best Buy, etc) where you can actually hold the camera before buying. (Some brands like Nikon are priced the same online as in store...the difference being S&H and any taxes. Older models can be had for better prices.) Good luck.

As far as Canon cameras go, and easy the wallet, the EOS T3i has a lot of "whoodie-do" for the money. It has a swivel screen-18megapixels-9 auto focus points-ISO goes up to 12,800 and it does video. I'm sure Nikon has something similar.
Happy Shopping

I have an old Canon AV1 with a 50mm lens and a 200mm zoom lens. Will these lenses work with a new Canon camera? I just pulled this old camera out this morning. The winder is broken/stuck. Other than that, the camera works perfectly. Do you think it's worth being repaired? Thanks for your help.

Ok I am old timer here, been on for two days now. lol. anyway I am buying a camera and have spent hours and hours online looking at a lot of possibilities, then went to store and played with them. I finally decided on a Canon T3I but don't use that as a guide. Research Research and if you know anyone who has a "whoodie-do" camera try it. Good Luck and cant wait to see your photos.

I don't know why everybody seems to think Canon, or Nikon when looking at cameras. If you want a "whoodie-do" camera, buy a Pentax. They are the best!

I have never tried…but I found this answer from someone else on Fixya …"No Canon FD lenses cannot be used on Canon EOS system cameras (all autofocus Canons except for the ancient and obsolete Canon T-series 35mm SLR's from the 1980's use the EOS mount).

There are very few cameras which can take them (35mm or digital) without some kind of expensive mounting converter which would include corrective optics…"
