Laptop with HDMI 'In'?

The tethering topic made me remember a question about it I never successfully solved: Is there a way I can use the HDMI 'Out' on my Canon DSLR and Sony HX300 to input to my laptop? I'v always used USB but HDMI would give better recording quality, right? (HD instead of MPEG 4 ?)
