I was just surprised today with 2 free tickets to the Penguins game on Friday night. Fifth row directly behind the net. I'd love any suggestions that you might have.. Thanks.

Leave the camera at home and enjoy the hockey game.

Nothing would make me happier. The guy giving me the tickets has been a great customer (photography) of mine. I was hoping (and he might be expecting) to give him some shots as a thank you for the tickets. Otherwise, I'd be quite happy with beer and nachos in my hands instead of a camera.

O.K. he gave you Penguin tickets so I assume he's a fan. Take a couple shots of big names in warm up skate--then a few 'action'(3 or 4) in first half of first period. Then put the camera in the bag and the bag under the seat and go back to the beer and nacho's and ENJOY the game for yourself!!.

call and find out if you can even bring your camera to the game, some stadiums do not allow "professional looking" cameras, by professional they mean any larger camera that has removeable lenses, nithing would be worse than to have security tell you you are not allowed to bring it in.

He already mentioned that the guy who sits next to him brings his gear to all the games.

I'm sorry, pigpen, I missed that. Where did the OP say that the guy was anything except a good customer? I agree with Annie Girl. The OP should check with the stadium regarding camera policies. Maybe the OP can take a P&S with him, or maybe an ILM in his pockets.

Shooting hockey is no different than shooting anything else. Shutter speed high enough to freeze action if that's your intent, spot meter on a player and set the camera and leave it at that exposure, don't let the camera wander up and down exposures depending on how many players are in the frame vs how much white ice.

Other than that...have fun and snap away.

If they're playing the Detroit Redwings, go wings! My two favorite hockey teams are the wings and any one playing the penguins. Nuf said about that,in Detroit no large lenses a loud.

I have shot hockey at 1/500 sec exposure and found that was enough. Do make sure that you "over expose" by about 1.5 stops as the ice will confuse the exposure. I use spot focussing with automatic focus tracking. You can see images I got from a hockey game at the following link. If you hover over the image, then click on the "i" in the flyout menu you can see all the technical details for the image. http://www.edmatphoto.com/Clients/Hockey-20121205-BlueShirts-All/27021038_ZTQSDX#!i=2265854658&k=PJvCK9D

Thankfully our Fuji Cameras look like toy junk cameras. Ive never had a security person turn me away with it. Most of them just laugh it off as a m43 babbys first camera.
