I read a review on moon Photos and the common mistake seems to be that everyone wants to shoot to slow of a shutter speed. Try 320 or faster if you can't do that with your Point and Shoot set it for Sports photos that should help and crank up to the max telephoto power. Here is my recent shot at 400 sp.
Shootin the Moon
Thanks, will go out and try it now, if the moon is still up?
I used a Nikon Coolpix P100 to shoot this. So it can do it. What i need to figure out is how to get rid of that messy line on the bottom left. The moon has a nice smooth line all the way around it except that area. Not sure why. I took probably 50 shots of the moon using different settings so I'm not sure what it was set on for this one. I need to start taking notes.
Deetle is right though.. all the shots I got had a shutter speed between 320 and 800.

forget taking notes, right click photo goto propertes and left click: Bang all info is there.
You know.. that seems like one of those things I should've known. Never crossed my mind. Thanks for the tip. Glad I don't need to take notes. I probably would not have been real good about doing that. So here's the story about that shot. f5.6, 1/640, ISO160
This one is one of my favorites. It also violates almost all of the rules. It was just at sunset. I was standing at a wrought iron fence and decided to give the moon a try. I was using my Sony a500 with a 300mm telephoto lens. The settings were, f 5.6 @ 1/60 sec. ISO 200. I rested my hand on the fence and took the shot. I have tripod shots using the timer that were not as good as this.
About a minute later the sky was all black
