Imitate Fugia Velvia

A couple of months ago I ran across a discussion of ways of imitating the saturation and color balance of Fugi Velvia Film. I don't recall where it was - can anyone provide a method or a link? It can be very valuable for certain landscape, still life and other special situations.

I neglected to mention that I meant imitation with a digital post processing program.

Poking around in Google, I'm reminded that Velvia 50 and Velvia 100 are quite different. I'm interested in the hypersaturation and balance of Velvia 50.

Several companies make Lightroom presets for simulating film attributes. I use two of them:

VSCO

and

Xel

both have Fuji Velvia presets in them.

DXO offers a software called "Film Pack", and it allows you to load any image into it, and then emulate pretty much any film effect you want, including Velvia and Kodachrome. It actually works quite well. Film Pack 4 has just been released recently and I believe DXO was offering Film Pack 3 full version for free.

The only way to get that velvia look, is to shoot velvia. VSCO4 does an OK job at velvia 100, and provia 400 under/over/pushed but its not very good at velvia 50. DxO film packs cant seem handle it very well either.

Point is, if you want that film look, shoot film. The emulation presets are hit and miss in terms of being exact. If you are picky/HAVE TO HAVE THE LOOK, you wont be pleased with the results.

I use VSCO4 for provia 400 looks but shoot Velvia and scan when I want velvia because I am not satisfied with its emulation process. Your experience will vary from my own.

I use DxO Filmpack for that purpose and it works perfectly. Version 4 is available on their web site for 1 month free trial.
Version 3 is currently offered completely free with the last issue of Digital Photographer.
