in the bushes by Portland Head Light, and I can't seem to nail the species down. I've checked in my bird books and believe them to be a type of sparrow, but, which one, I'm not sure.

Lovely shot of a little brown bird. I don't know if it's true, but my daughter told me even expert birders sometimes refer to "little brown birds."

Thank you very much; still, every bird is a specific genus and species, and, besides, these are such colorful little brown birds.

I agree, they are nice looking birds, artistically photographed in great detail. I just don't know the specific genus and species of this one.

Does the photo accurately represent the actual color of the bird? I don't know any sparrow that looks that blue.

And I believe gjtoth wins. Leave it to him to know a female when he sees one.

This is one of the most common birds in N.A, though not a native. It is a House Sparrow, also AKA English Sparrow (Passer domesticus). In was introduced into the states a long time ago. This is a Fall plumage male.
