Looks like lights on a wand that was angled toward the camera as it was rotated a bit erratically in somewhat of a circle during a time exposure.

Keep the shutter open on a dark night where there are; traffic lights, car lights, city lights, Christmas lights and move your camera in circles, patterns or just write with it.

Vidvicar and Snowbear are very close to the fact, it is a string of small Christmas lights taped to a 8 ft. pole and moved around in the back yard. I found out that if I moved them too fast They had light and dark trails. This was the 60 cycle of the power, lights really doturn on and off 60 times a second.

Wow! So that is why there is a dark spot! That is really interesting, how the power cycles affected the picture, but not the live view.
