Hi, I am new here thanks to a chance encounter at my mom's place in Nokomis, FL.
I have the opportunity to purchase a used 75-300mm for $125 or a new 55-250mm lens for $144. Which would you buy and why?
BTW, I knew more about photography when I was 10 but have forgotten most of it. Just getting back into the game.
Thanks in advance for your learned opinion.

Are you speaking of the Canon examples? There are two 75-300s in the Canon lineup - one has the newer USM focusing. In either case, I'd probably go for the new 55-250 unless you have a full-frame in your future, in which case I'd get the 75-300 if it's the new one.
I have the 75-300mm kit lens....it's ok as long as you're not looking for tack sharp images ! I use it for wildlife and shooting the moon !
My answer would depend on what you are going to be shooting. Since I like to shoot wildlife (and sports for several local papers) I would look for the one that is the fastest. (then the newest).

I have seen for my Sony lenses advertised at their mm x a crop factor of 1.5 .. that is to say .. 50mm is 75mm and 200 mm is advertised as 300 mm. Just be aware that is is not is when it comes to the advertised mm of a used "classic" lens!!
