I searched this but did not find anything.....What's the opinions on toting a DSLR around the city? Is it safe? What about a tripod?

I've toted a DSLR around the city safely many times. Just need to be aware of your surroundings and appropriately cautious. Due to police interpretation of city ordinances I would lose the tripod, however.

I have found carrying a camera around NYC is only dangerous when you don't use it. If you use it a lot I doubt anything will ever bother you. But I have found that true in most places I go.

so far, so good. Tripods are technically legal (except when in the subway and Grand Central Station), but they're only as legal as the nearest NYPD officer says they are.....

I brought mine everywhere. It's a crowded place so setting up a tripod would be futile.

I went everywhere with my DSLR and was out most nights till 3:00 AM and never once felt threatened or uncomfortable.

People actually approached me and wanted me to take their pictures with their cameras.

Despite what you have heard, it is a very friendly place.

As I mentioned, you just have to use it, if you don't you might lose it.

I am a Bronx boy who grew up during all types of things. The best advice is pay attention to your surroundings. Camera bags that advertise the brand of camera may make one a target in some instances. If asked, it is an old camera that is beat up.

Manhattan is different than most of the other boroughs (I am not familiar with Staten Island or Brookly (Crooklyn?). That is the place for photos if you just want to get a standard NYC shot. Go to Van Cortdlandt Park 242 st and Bway for an oasis in the city or Botanical Garden in the Bronx.

I brought my DSLR on my first trip to NY. No problems but I was definitely tired of carrying it around by the end of the day. NY is a walking city so you're on the go all the time. I brought my bridge camera the last two trips and found it more enjoyable. When I zipped up my jacket, you didn't know I had it. The camera was with me every minute so I actually got more shots. Have fun.

If the camera is out in the open, use the neck strap across your chest. Grab-and-run thieves prefer easy targets and usually avoid situations where they have to struggle to get the goods off the victim.

In most places where tripods are not allowed mono-pods usually are allowed and if one is considerate at these few places by putting a strap around the legs so it is obviously not convenient to open you can still carry it and us it as a mono pod.

In terms of safety, NYC is no more dangerous thatn any other place as long as you're smart about what's around you. You're certainly safer than in Chicago or L.A.

Just did this shoot in NYC last weekend

ZERO problems but all handheld. There are some heavy permit fees in NYC for "professional" shoots and, in many cases, NYPD can decide that a tripod with a P&S is a "professional" shoot.

You might not have any problems or you might run into a cop or a brownshirt having a bad day. No way to know but the less visible you are the better.

It's NYC, of course he doesn't have a carry permit.
Lawful citizens in NY and NJ are not allowed to protect themselves. Only cops and criminals are allowed to carry guns.

Correct! There is a sign as you enter NYC: "If you are not a cop or a criminal, please deposit your gun in the designated container." :D
