FYI I was able to pick up most of the parts needed to make this for less than $15 at Lowes. I had a cheap keychain laser pointer that I disassembled for the lens.
I will construct it this weekend but I have been having fun with the lens beforehand. It's being held by a bobby pin and taped to my phone. I used the digital zoom to take a picture of a yellow background on my LCD display. As you may or may not know, your screens do not emit yellow light. The picture I posted clearly shows the pixels lit red and green. Linked below is a great video with an explanation.
