I am thinking of buying a nikon 28-70 2.8 mm lens used. It is less expensive then the current 24-70 2.8 and I think it gets great reviews still. Any thoughts? pros cons? Anyone know what the right price used it should be? Thanks!

Keh Camera Brokers or Used Camera Buyer.com should help with the value. I'll leave it to others on the review of lens performance. All I remember is the 24-70 f2,8 was praised as a highly improved optic. IT is a FX lens.

The 28-70mm F2.8 was/is a very good lens, great sharpness. It was discontinued in favor of the 24-70mm F2.8 AF-S lenses which focus much faster and has wider range. If AF speed isn't a major concern for you then it would still be a good but as lower demand has pushed its used selling price down. I have one in my rental inventory and it is a popular choice.

You might consider the tamron version. I bought it new for the about the same price as the Nikon used. It also has VR. Use it on my D7100 and love it

The 28-70 is AF-S if I am not mistaken.

Do you find it to be extremely sharp wide open or closed and on both ends? I love my d7100 but I am thinking I should get a lens that will fit a full frame eventually. Thanks!

I find it sharp throughout the entire zoom range. I got mine about 3 years ago used from KEH for $500 in EX+ condition, it still looks like new to me. I usually use my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 in the field myself as it is shorter and lighter, yet just as sharp.

I use the 28-70 and find it the best lens I have. Pictures are sharp and the colors are great. It focuses about as fast as my wife's 24-70. The only difference I notice is that it doesn't go down to 24mm. However, my wife always complains about her shots on the 24-70 at 24mm are too distorted. I don't miss 24mm, because I cover that area with a 17-35. they are older lenses, but both beautiful glass. Listen for the telltale squeak of the afs motor going bad on either of the above mentioned used lenses you might consider buying and adjust the price accordingly.

Ok- so I found one in excellent condition on ebay for $650 with a 14 day return policy. I think I am going to go for the Nikon.

Is yours sharp at f2.8? I had the Nikon 35-70 f2.8 which I needed to shoot at 2.8 frequently and I found it to be slightly soft at 2.8. So, being a cheap skate, I bought the Tokina 28-70 f2.8. It was a nice sharp lens, except at 2.8. I sold both lenses, bit the bullet, and bought the Nikon 28-70 f2.8, only to find that it, too was slightly soft at 2.8. So, my lesson from this was that because I could live with the range of the 35-70, I should have kept the 35-70 and saved a lot of time, money and frustration.

I also have the 35-70 along with my 28-70. Although the 35-70 is ok, it doesn't compare to the 28-70. so much depends on the copy of the lens you have and if your camera is tuned properly.

I respect your knowledge regarding this subject, I wasn't trying to contradict your experience and opinion. My copy is sharp at 2.8.

Did you do the micro adjust for focus?
Or was the lens itself just soft?
