I love using a flashlight (light painting), but I've never tried it on gravestones or anything large... yet. I have used the technique, though, to photograph my daughter's wedding shoes.

flashlight is an excellent idea.. are you hand holding the flashlight and tripod on the camera or do you place the flash light on a table or something? I was thinking about using some work lights to try to do so stuff..

To do light painting, you must have your camera on a tripod and use a long exposure. For the shoes, I believe it was somewhere around 20 or 30 seconds. You need light to focus your subject, but you must start your exposure in the dark. Use the flashlight to 'paint' the light on your subject by moving it around the areas you want lighted, avoiding the areas where you don't want too much.
I really like the cemetery shot. Nice job on the lighting and focus! The absence of noise is quite impressive for a dimly lighted shot. Did you use any special technique or settings to achieve this? Was it done in PP? However you did it, you did it well. I love how the older stones look and how they slant in different directions. This shot really makes a statement to me.

Thank you mommy... Nothing special..just a long shot and a flashlight...I didn't have very much time the other night but I'm planning to go back....Sony a55..30sec..F8..ISO 100..28mm..man mode..and a tripod..
I swear, Silvertone, I LOVE your pics! Take a look at O Winston Link sometime. The thought you give to your shots remind me of his work--and that is in museums! I am going to go outside and smash my camera now.
