Hi, This is my first post and I have a question.
I am the Education Chairman for my club (West Valley Photo Club) in the Pheonix Arizona area. We have a Forum for our club members. My problem concerns reducing image file sizes so the image can be posted on our forum. The max size seems to be 800 px (long dimension) and some of our users try to come in with way bigger files sizes which won't upload. They get discouraged and quit trying.
I use either Lightroom 3 or Photoshop CS5 to size my images for the forum. Many of our members cannot afford either of these. So my question is what inexpensive software is out there that can be used (PC or Apple) to reduce file size?
You can get older versions of Elements that could be used and these older versions are pretty inexpensive. Do you know of any others?
Thanks loads

Photos can be resized in many different programs - I believe that even Windows PhotoLive or whatever it's called can do it.
IrfanView - free
Picasa - free
Another thought - have the forum software altered to allow larger sizes. Unless one is using an iPod to browse your forum, 800 pixels is nothing these days. VGA monitors went out of style around 1998. Try setting your limits to 2048x2048 or something.
Thanks for the info. We are trying to avoid picasa as it is pretty much a deadend even though it is free.
As to making adjustments in the forum, we can't do because it is impossible to contact the support personel. It is a flaky forum and not one of my chosing, but I have to live with what I have.
Thanks
You can resize with MS paint. Already included on windows machines.
There is no "MS paint" on my Vista or Windows 7 machines.
Sorry

Sorry
FYI...Start>All Programs>Accessories>Paint
Practically the same path for all Win flavors from XP on up.
If you use Paint often put a shortcut to it on your desktop.
Irfanview is a quick, free way to change image size. Just hit Ctrl-R and make your choice.
FASTSTONE!!! includes an e-mail routine that will re-size selected images and even compose the e-mail file if you have an e-mail client like Outlook.
Thanks guys for all the good information. I did find "Paint" in the assessories.
I use ACDSee Pro 5 but the company has a less expensive program- ACDSee 14 that should do that and much more.
I've been a user since the program was freeware.
Download the trial and explore.
filing, renaming, burning CD/DVD, exposure, raw adjustment..the list goes on and on. No, I don't work for the company.

If I'm not mistaken, Windows Image Viewer will do that. It comes on most computers already installed. That is if you have windows.
