Why Post?

I'm beginning to wonder why bother posting photos to the photo gallery anymore. I take care not to post junk, and when I do post what I think are decent photos, they disappear from page one within about 30 minutes. I guess there are so many members posting now that we all get bumped off. Everybody's posting and few are looking. So, again I ask, why post?

I agree, many of the pics are nothing more than vacation pictures of poor quality.

I've thought the same thing. Once in a while I get a response.,, but not often.
Do you look at all the photos? I don't have time to do this. I'm sure that there are some wonderful photos on the list but I just can't sit and look at all of them. I pick a few that have clever titles, or if I have the time, I quickly look through the list and if I see some that really hit me between the eyes, I comment.
You can always go to the "analysis" thread, but you better have a good reason to put a photo there. You need to have a specific problem.
I think there are too many folks with photos and the list is too long. Don't know that there is an answer but maybe some categories, like flowers, landscapes, people etc., would help.

Steve, I have never posted a photo, but I'm working on a website that I can share here. If people want to look, they will, if not, that's ok too.
It's not of much value to be critiqued by somebody that just started shooting yesterday.
I also probably have not even looked at that section in months. But I will say, that when I have, there are lots of names/perticipantes that I have never heard of before, meaning there are participants that do only that.
Maybe there could be a special foto section just for people that can show a pic that has won a prize in any contest. I don't mean one entered with good intentions, but one that actually was awarded something.
The poster could state the contest and the award given. And the award could NOT have been here on the Hog. That would encourage those that would like to participate, to seek out joining clubs, county fairs, art leagues etc. etc. That kind of outside participation would help those that are wanting to improve, to move to the next level.
I know many here do those types of competitions.

Anyway, just a thought.

Post because there are those of us here who like photographs and not 'vacation snaps' and we care to learn and do spend the time to search out certain people and their work.

This one is for ADMIN
A good way to get to the "good ones" would be to have a rating by admin. Those could be placed in a different area, like Editor's Choice or something like that. This means more work for admin, maybe some disgruntled photographers complaining because they have not been selected, and...lots more. Of course, one good idea would be to require exif data and/or originals. I don't think winning s price is a good idea because few people have. I think many photos belong on the vacation type others are in the intermediate, advanced and pro photographers. I don't know if it would be a good idea to use these categories...

Oops....Vacations are when I get to places worth photographing. I put up a photo today of the Golden Gate Bridge that I thought was pretty good, but didn't get much comment. It was not the usual angle and I was kinda proud of it. I got more response from my pic of one of the streets of S.F. that starts high and ends in the Bay, ala Bullitt. We had fun driving that one. I also have one, not posted, of the one block on Lomard street that makes six curves as it comes down the hill. That's a fun one, too. I think I'll try one from the Pacific Coast Hwy, which we drove on the way up from San Diego.

There have been several requests for a filmstrip like in the photo contests so members can quickly glance then take a deeper look when warranted.
I cast my vote for this option too.

Hey come on guys, every member can post and not all have the same ability or equipment. Why should it be only the Photoshop experts that can post photos ?
If you don`t like the quality of some of them, then don`t whinge, just post a reply and try to help us less fortunate.

I think the forum is a victim of its own success. I've seen pictures disappear off of Page 1 far quicker than 30 mins.

Rather than segregating posts on the basis of quality (who decides anyway?), another possibility would be to add your preferred posters to your buddy list. You will then be notified of their posts. They wouldn't have to be REAL buddies (UHH members that you contact a lot) - just added for the notifications. And "Buddies" can be added or removed as is seen fit.

EDIT - Perhaps "Notifications" is the wrong term. Posts by your Buddies can be accessed using the links on the following line at the top of the Buddies section:-

Topics started by your buddies: Watched Topics | Newest Topics | Topics with recent replies

I just go to the Newest Topics and work my way thru..... First by checking for clever titles and checking out who the OP is, then if I have time I go back over all of the posts. If it gets too long, I just quickly check the first couple pages and then click the button to mark all as read and start over!

I tend to go by titles...sorry to say, but I don't have time to look at every image and a cryptic/clever title usually means crappy image.

I also tend to stay away from "what is this?" sorts of posts.

For myself, it would be very helpful to be very specific in your title so I can easily tell what I'm going to see like:

"Golden Gate bridge at sunset from odd angle"

Instead of "sunset dreams...." or "end of the day..." or something artsy-fartsy like that.

(not picking on Steve here)

Posting Photos, yes it can be rather frustrating, but it does give a lot of folks a way to increase there message counts. I do look at a lot of them, I rarely leave a comment. As far as the ones I post, to me no news is good news. I just don't post that many. I don't post my most bestest only my so so.

This is exactly why we created specialty forums like Macro, Birds in Flight, HDR, Astronomical, etc. Recent posts remain on page 1 much longer within these forums, than in general Photo Gallery. Also, critique & comments are more applicable because they are usually from peers interested in the same technique or subject.
