Sigma 70-200 mm F 2.8 D 2.8D APO HSM EX Lens & Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 80-200 mm F/2.8 D AF ED IF Lens Please advise thanks, I am looking for personal experience on performance

I have used the Nikon 80-200. It is a sharp lens but was very heavy to use compared to the Nikon 70-200 AF-S I rented for an event. My guess is that the Sigma will have faster focusing with the HSM.

The lenses you mention are very close in all respects with the Nikon slightly sharper looking at Photozone Imatest numbers. As mentioned, the complaints mentioned for the 80-200 are slow focus. I would also recommend you look at the Sigma 100-300 F4 EX - now discontinued. I have one - it is a great lens - I use it mosly with 1.4X.

I know it isn't on your list but the Nikkor 28-300vr never comes off one of md D7000s

Is The 28-300 a dx lens ? if so I would like to go FX as I may upgrade down the road and low light is a must have

For moving objects that is a plus! Thanks

I sold my Nikon 80-200mm F2.8D after using the Sigma just once. The 70-200mm F2.8 Sigma is extremely fast focusing compared to the older Nikon, and image quality is comparable if not a touch sharper with the Sigma.
Nikons 28-300mm is an FX lens, and a wonderful daylight lens, but its really slow in low light and essentially useless without running your ISO up very high. But I use the heck out of it in daylight shooting, its a favorite.

MT. Have you used the Nikon 70-200 and, if you have, how does the Sigma compare?

I have not used the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VR II, at double the cost of the Sigma I cannot afford it to do a comparison. Wanna buy one and send it to me for a long-term test? ;-)

You ask about the Sigma and moving objects ?

Pictures often speak louder than words - these are with my D300 and this Sigma lens - http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/325-sigma-af-70-200mm-f28-ex-hsm-apo-dg-macro-nikon-review--test-report

Sure. Why not three? It looks like the OP, you and I could all use one. I'll just need to get a second mortgage.

FX

I would never buy a lens for a cropped sensor

JR - I honestly think that, on this occasion, the OP wants an f2.8 lens. The Sigma lens I have suggested and demonstrated, albeit on a D300, is an FX lens.
