Homeless in Los Angeles

Last year, I had the pleasure of shooting along with a master portrait photographer and learning his techniques for shooting homeless people portraits. We shot the entire morning in the major homeless area in downtown Los Angeles. As we were packing up and leaving, a group of bicycle riders came by, they were the Naked Bike Ride group. My friend did not take one photo because he is a portrait photographer, on the other hand, I did get some interesting and unexpected images. Here is a group of color and B&W photos of three nice homeless people who posed for us.

Single flash, he used a snoot, asked the subjects to use a paper towel he supplied to wipe of their faces of oils, etc to prevent reflection, worked on poses, but not much, they did fine with just a little suggestion. He mainly does head shots and we took some environmental images as well as head shots.
Actually, I was surprised since my friend did not process himself, he went to a lab and supervised the photoshop work. Our basic results were similar, the processing was the key.
I learned from his "in camera results", then did my own processing using adobe camera raw, and adjusting exposure, color temp, contrast etc to what he his parameters were. It was a very interesting day.

Sounds like a wonderful learning experience and I appreciate you taking the time to share your wisdom.
