Now, I am not up on what is available, but I have never seen the question asked to can someone explain to me, why, soldiers are not issued with bullet resistant clothing.

Ok, nothing is truly bullet proof, that can be worn, but surely in this 21st century, there has to be something governments can issue soldiers to offer some protection.

I have not gone to the links you listed but I understand your concern. We can only pray for peace and that the wasted money by our gov. will go to provide more safety for our soldiers and all of those who stand watch for us so we can be safe.

Combat troops are issued vest, however they will stop a 9MM but not effective on anything larger. Dragon Skin is supposed to be the best but US troops are not allowed to wear them? I don't know about troops from other countries. I retired several years ago so I'm not sure if the above is still true.

Of course, JR1, there is kevlar body armor available in the price range of $500-$700 which will effectively protect the wearer from "handgun caliber" ammunition. To protect from the .30cal intermediate power rifle ammunition is more difficult, and not as reliable. Oh, and there's approximately a 5 year life expectancy for this armor. AND, when combined with everything the soldiers must carry, it's cumbersome, and hot.
Most military personnel venturing into high-risk situations, like Special Ops, or SEALs, etc. routinely wear body armor. It's just not practical for ALL military services.
I hope this helps.

What I don't understand is that with the science we have, the money available, surely logically it is more humane and sensible to protect troops to the very best of our ability rather than spend millions on computer software that does not work or useless hardware

Components Funding Change, 2009 to 2010
Operations and maintenance $283.3 billion +4.2%
Military Personnel $154.2 billion +5.0%
Procurement $140.1 billion −1.8%
Research, Development, Testing & Evaluation $79.1 billion +1.3%
Military Construction $23.9 billion +19.0%
Family Housing $3.1 billion −20.2%
Total Spending 683.7 billion +3.0%

What price a human life

We are no better here, I would gladly see taxes raised to save the lives of personnel

The best thing you can offer soldiers is peace.

Peace= the result of WINNING.
Obama's habit of saying
"the war is over" and leaving does not bring peace, it prolongs war.

To have peace one side must concede defeat. This will never happen with radical muslim extremist scumbags.

muslims have been at war with everyone NOT muslim since the dawn of Islam.

Who was President when the first Americans were kidnapped and held for ransom? Thomas Jefferson.

It aint getting better

One of my Grandson's was in the Army Rangers and he and most of his squad refused to wear armor due to the heaviness, hotness and awkwardness...... I asked him if any of his squad had been killed because of not wearing the armor..

He said "Grandpa, the majority of my squad got killed either by snipers and hit in head or by IED's and were blown to kingdom come"

He himself was blown out of a HumVee, the driver was killed, he was blown several feet and slammed into a building which resulted in permanent and painful back problems. BUT he would go back in a minute to HELP those he left behind. He received the Medal of Honor for Meritorius performance in the performance of his duty.

British troops are issued with very good body armour and helmets that will offer portection from small arms fire and shrapnel. It is not practicle to wear more protective clothing as they cannot operate effectively (especially in the heat). They have also been equipped with uparmoured vehicles like the Mastiff, which can survuve a mine strike. At the end of the day, if politicians want to use force to get their way then soldiers are going to be placed in danger. As an ex-soldier i personally think that the British army has a great system of care for soldiers as they return, injured or not, from operational tours.
