I know that this photo is not clear but I was wondering what this bird is.

I believe it is either an egret or a white heron. The leg color would make it easier to be sure. the egret has black legs
Looks like a great white egret...the blue spot on the body is curious, however.....

Thank you that's what I thought but the blue color on the wings stumped me. I would have gotten the legs but she had them buried in the marsh.

I believe it's an egret and the blue is a band type attachment to identify the bird. I know the do this to some swans in our area.

It's a Great Egret. The blue you are seeing isn't part of the bird. It must be something in front of the bird or possibly something that the bird rubbed against. But they don't normally have blue stuff on the side as your image depicts.

The blue moved with the bird and it was on both sides of it's body, same place. Maybe it is some type of marking it was right into the feathers. I was hoping to have a better shot. I will be going back out to see if I can get a clearer picture. She is always so far away.

Thank you, I went down again and she was a lot closer. Yes it is a band that put on the bird. I took some better shots and will post them later.

Great, if you can read the numbers you can call it in to the bird banding folks and tell them where and when you saw it, they should let you know where and when it was banded. They are based in Maryland.

Thank you for the information, I will try to see if I can and call it in. I am curious to know.

Would love to answer your question, cindij, but I'm landlocked.
All I can tell you is if it's legs are dark, it might be a Great Egret; if it's legs are light it could be a Great White Heron and is also bigger than the egret.
Watch out, though, for "muddy" legs.

Hello there. What you have here is a Great Egret. I am a birder but if you need proof go to Cornell Birding site and type in Great Egret or send them the picture and they will ID it for you. Trust me I'm right :-)
Maybe someone shot it with a paint ball gun... Just kidding folks. ;-) Cheers.
